ECU continues to work with UniSuper in its continued support of career progression opportunities to address barriers faced in the workplace relating to career breaks. The recent launch of the Workplace Gender Equality Agency’s 2017-2018 dataset reveals that while Australia enjoyed its largest single-year drop in the gender pay gap for five years (down 1.1%), the disparity still remains at 21.3% for total remuneration. Men take home $25,717 a year more than women on average.

UniSuper are proud to be ECU’s super fund of choice being Australia’s only super fund dedicated to higher education and research professionals. With the success of the 2017 launch of the ECU UniSuper Development Fund, the scheme continues for 2018 with their contribution to two $2,000 professional development awards to support ECU staff who have returned to the workplace after parental and/or carers leave.

ECU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steve Chapman CBE, presented certificates to the recipients in a formal ceremony at the Joondalup campus on 28 November 2018 with the event was hosted by ECU Athena SWAN Lead and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Partnerships), Professor Cobie Rudd.

Professor Chapman noted the disparity in superannuation savings for women at the point of retirement which in Australia is on average $113,000 less than men.

“The harsh reality is that most Australian women retire with much less superannuation than men. I have been a committed Workplace Gender Equality Agency Pay Equity Ambassador since 2016 and ECU will continue to work towards redressing financial bias and closing the gender pay gap.”

A great turn out from the ECU community marked the occasion with Gareth Healy, UniSuper Client Advisor attending the event as a special guest.

UniSuper are scheduled to move onsite at the ECU Joondalup campus in Building 1 in January 2019. For more information on UniSuper offerings at ECU please visit the website.

We congratulate the 2018 recipients:

  • Academic staff recipient: Dr Magdalena Wajrak, Chemistry, School of Science
  • Professional staff recipient: Dr Kylie Stevenson, Learning Support Centre of Learning and Teaching
