How to Register to Borrow from the Library
1. Obtain a student/staff ID (Smartcard) by showing proof of
enrolment/employment at MMR (MultiMedia Resources).
For location and times please check MMR Opening Hours.
2. Your student/staff ID is also your library card.
3. Activate your student/staff ID/Library Card at any ECU Campus library loans desk or MMR service desk.
Members of ECU Alumni Association are able to borrow from the library and remotely access some databases.
You can join the Alumni by completing the Alumni Membership Form and forwarding it to the Alumni Office or bringing it to any ECU Campus Library.
You can borrow material once the library has proof of your eligibility for Alumni membership, usually after confirmation by the Alumni Office. (Please note that this may not occur immediately).
Alumni members have remote access to the Proquest 5000 suite of databases. To access these database please click here and login using your surname and library barcode number. Alternatively you can do a search using the library catalogue for the title Proquest 5000, and then follow the links to login.

ECU students and staff are eligible to borrow from other Universities which are members of the Australian Vice Chancellors Committee (AVCC). In addition they may also become members of the TAFE colleges party to the ECU/TAFE agreement. ECU students/staff wishing to join other institutions as reciprocal borrowers will need to check with the relevant library as to that libraries rules.
Students/Staff from other similar AVCC Universities and W.A. TAFE's are also eligible to join ECU as reciprocal borrowers.
To Register as a Reciprocal Borrower
- Students from AVCC member universities (other than ECU, Curtin, Murdoch and UWA) which are party to the University Library Australia (ULA) Borrowing Scheme need a photo ID with current residential address, such as a Perth address to join ECU, and proof of current enrolment. Proof of current enrolment must include enrolment expiry date or details of dates covered by enrolment, and may be ID from home institution, confirmation of enrolment letter or information from the home institution administration system.
- Staff members from AVCC institutions need photo ID with relevant address, with a Perth address for joining ECU, plus a copy of a letter or document confirming current employment.
- To join Curtin, Murdoch or UWA, ECU students and staff only need to register online prior to attending at the relevant library and take their University ID with them when first attending the relevant library. Similarly staff and students from those institutions need to register online with ECU.
- Online registrations are processed Mon-Fri, and may take up to 48 hours for your registration to be active. If you need immediate registration, please register in person at the library you wish to borrow from, do not register online.
- Eligible TAFE students wishing to enrol at ECU libraries need to present Photo ID and the Reciprocal Borrowing Card from their home library.
- Students from Universities not in the ULA borrowing scheme will need a letter of introduction providing indemnity for any borrowing default by the student and proof of current enrolment.
- Note: Reciprocal borrowers at ECU are subject to ECU Overdue penalties.

Community Borrowers at ECU Library
ECU Library accepts members of the community at any of our campus libraries.
How to become a Member
For a standard Community membership there is an annual fee of $88.00 or a concession fee of $22.00 upon application.
In addition there is also a Community plus Music membership category for an annual non refundable fee of $500.00 which has no concession fee applicable.
Community Membership does not provide remote access to library subject databases.
The annual fee is not applicable to:
- Educational institutions with special agreement.
- Associate Members
To join,
complete an application form at any ECU Library (bring
current photo ID).
Payment can be made at the cashier (office hours)
or via the library's copycard system.

Borrowing items
Borrowing from any ECU Campus Library is easy once you have a valid membership:
1. You may now borrow using the Easyloan units (Self issuing units) or at the library loans desk.
2. Borrowed ECU
library items may be returned to any ECU campus library. The exceptions are items from Reserve which must be returned to the campus from which they were borrowed.
After Hours Returns
chutes are located close to the entrance of all ECU campus libraries and are accessible 7 days a week when the library is closed.
3. Please
note that all late materials may attract Penalties.

Library Record or check your ECU student email.
Borrowing Limits
Differing borrower types have different borrowing limits.
Special provisions apply for external offshore and external students in Australia. In addition, provision has been made for students from other universities, as well as alumni and members of the public.
Depending on the borrower type items for loan include: Books; Charts; Posters; CD-Roms; Music (LP and CD); videos.
Items not for loan include: Models, Reference Material, Journals and some special collections.

Requesting a Library Item
Recalling An Item
- If an item is on loan and due in more than 8 days you may request for the early return..
- If an item is due in less than 8 days you may still request that item, but the date will not alter.
- When the item is available for pick-up you will be notified by email.
- If you receive a “recall notice”, someone has placed a request on your loan.
- You must return
that item by the new due date or overdue penalties will apply.
- The ECU Library Rule 5.1(e) states ALL loans are subject to recall.
- Not
all ECU library borrowers can place requests.
(Please check loans parameters under your borrower category.) - A maximum of 6 requests can be placed at one time.
- Reserve collection and videos can not be requested.

Requesting an inter-campus loan via the library catalogue
If an item is available at another ECU campus library it can be transferred to your home campus library.
- Search the ECU library catalogue for the item you wish to request.
- Click on REQUEST once you have located the item.
- Enter your name and student number (or barcode).
- Choose your pick-up location.
- Enter cancel if not filled by date (optional).
- SUBMIT request
- Choose the item you wish to request.
- Click on REQUEST SELECTED ITEM.
- Start over to make another request.
- Intercampus loan requests can not be placed on 3 day loans.
Requesting an inter-campus Journal article via the library catalogue (each article costs $3.30)
- Search the ECU library catalogue for the journal title you wish to request
- Click on REQUEST once you have located the item
- Enter your name and student number (or barcode)
- Enter cancel if not filled date (optional)
- Enter the article details
- Internal students enter ADS username
- Click SUBMIT

Requesting inter-campus book chapters
- For internal students contact Loans Services (there is a $3.30 charge)
- External students please use this form or if unable to open the document contact External Library Services
Making a request via the phone
- Telephone your home campus library loans desk.
- Provide correct Author/Title/Call number and your student number.
- Staff will place the request for you and advise you of possible pick-up date.
Recall an item or inter-campus loan request via the loans desk
- See your home campus loans desk.
- Provide Author/Title/Call number of the item you wish to request, and your student card.
- Staff will place the request for you and advise you of possible pick-up date.
Renewing Your Loan
Most items in the ECU collection are available for renewal.
Please check the Loans Parameters to see if you can renew the items..
An item CANNOT be renewed if it has been recalled.
Please return items by the due date to avoid Overdue Penalties.
Renewals Online
- Enter your Login to My Library Record from the ECU library catalogue.
- Click on Items currently checked out.
- Select the items you wish to renew and click RENEW SELECTED ITEMS.
- Alternatively click RENEW ALL which will renew all items on loan to you.
- You CANNOT renew online if you have overdue penalties or if you have overdue items.
- Please contact the loans desk immediately to check why you cannot renew.
Renewals in person at the Loans Desk
- Contact the loans desk.
- Have your student Smartcard ready to scan.
- Let staff know which items you wish to renew.
- They will renew the items for you and advise you of the new due date.
- Telephone your home campus library Loans Desk.
- Inform staff you wish to renew items on loan to you.
- Staff will ask for your student ID number or name.
- Let staff know which items you wish to renew.
- Staff will renew items and advise you of the new due date.
Library Penalty Schedule (Overdue Loans)
The library has a penalty system to ensure resources are available for all students.
- Overdue and penalty notices are sent as a courtesy only.
- Borrowers are responsible for the return of items irrespective of the receipt/non-receipt of notices.
- ECU students will receive all library notices via their ECU student email address.
- Regularly check your student email account as messages will not be delivered if your mailbox size limit (quota) is exceeded.
- ECU will not guarantee delivery to forwarding addresses and will not monitor and/or manage undeliverable messages.
- Non-ECU students can register their email address with loans staff or their notices will be sent via post.
- Any borrower who has items overdue may be invoiced for the cost of the item plus GST and any accrued penalties.
- Failure to clear an invoice or fines may result in further penalties being applied. All outstanding fees, library fines and overdue books must be returned and paid so that you are eligible to graduate.

Overdue items will accrue the following fines:

| Owing $20 or more in fines | No borrowing allowed until charges reduced below $20 |
Payment of library penalty fees can be made at any ECU Campus Library or ECU Campus Cashier.
