Projects

The Thermofluids Research Group has four themes for its research projects:

  • Hydrogen Technology, Alternate Energy and Energy Systems
  • Fluids
  • Combustion
  • Experimental Techniques

Details on the projects undertaken under each of these themes are listed below:

Current projects

  • An experimental and numerical study of surface interactions in swirling jets
  • Biomass energy utilisation and combustion in a lab-scale burner
  • Design and development of swirl nozzles
  • Modelling a Reverse Osmotic desalination device
  • Optimisation of renewable energy systems based on PV/wind/hydrogen using intelligent techniques
  • Stand‐alone solar‐PV hydrogen energy systems incorporating Reverse Osmosis

Past projects

  • A microcontroller based electrolytic cell for hydrogen production
  • Application of phase-locked digital infrared imaging to individuals undergoing exercise
  • Investigations into the effect of nozzle geometry on entrainment in gaseous jets
  • Methodologies for identification and suppression of reflections within thermal images
  • Performance of compression ignition engines
  • Schlieren based flow visualisations of buoyant flows
  • The application of heat flux sensors to individuals undergoing exercise
