Freeboard effects in a fixed bed biomass combustor

Laboratory scale fixed bed combustors are used to help gain a better understanding of larger commercial-scale systems. These smaller combustors can be utilised to study factors influencing combustor performance such as the rate of thermal conversion, emissions and the role of both primary and secondary air. With overall performance likely to be influenced by the freeboard region formed above the fuel bed, this PhD project examines how variations to the freeboard affect fixed bed combustor operation when using pellet-type biomass fuels.
