The association between supported playgroups and the transition to school

In 2012 the investigators undertook a research project that examined a supported playgroup operating within a school environment in a low socio-economic context. The playgroup targeted families with children aged birth to three years and offered opportunities for families to socialise in a supportive environment with provision for educational opportunities.

The 2012 research project was an initial pilot study to investigate the developing relationships with families, community and the school environment.

The 2013 project tracked the same cohort of families and children identified in the initial project and investigated whether the transition from the schools’ playgroup into the Kindergarten program supported the children’s social and emotional performance and dispositions to learning. Comparisons were made between the whole kindergarten cohort; children that had attended the supported playgroup and children who did not attend.
