Learning Destinations

The Children’s University Western Australia Partnership (CUWAP) connects children and young people with a diverse network of Learning Destinations that offer engaging, enriching and inspiring learning experiences beyond the classroom. These destinations encourage curiosity, broaden interests and provide opportunities for children to explore new ideas, develop confidence and discover potential future study and career pathways.

Learning Destinations include cultural institutions and community organisations such as libraries, museums, zoos, parks, art galleries, theatres, sporting clubs, school-based clubs and local businesses. They offer a range of activities that connect children's interests with learning opportunities and, where appropriate, link to higher education courses and future careers.

There are two types of Learning Destinations:

  • Public Learning Destinations: Venues and organisations, such as libraries, museums and zoos, that are accessible to all Children’s University members and, in many cases, the wider community.
  • Restricted Learning Destinations: Learning opportunities designed for a specific Children’s University audience, typically through school-based clubs and activities.

Learning Destinations may offer face-to-face or virtual activities, providing flexibility and extending access to learning opportunities for children across metropolitan, and regional communities. This is particularly important for children experiencing educational disadvantage, for whom access to enriching extracurricular experiences may otherwise be limited.

All Learning Destinations undertake a quality assurance process, known as Planning for Learning, to ensure activities provide meaningful educational experiences and align with the Children’s University learning framework. Activities are encouraged to connect children's interests with higher education disciplines and potential career pathways. For example:

  • School STEM Club: Science, engineering, computing and mathematics.
  • Sporting Club: Sports science, health science and teacher education.
  • Theatre: Performing arts, acting, dance and arts management.
  • School Gardening Club: Environmental science, botany, agriculture and food science.

Through this diverse network of Learning Destinations, CUWAP aims to widen access to enriching learning experiences, particularly for children experiencing disadvantage, while fostering curiosity, building self-efficacy and confidence, and raising aspirations for future education. By encouraging children to explore beyond their familiar environments, the program seeks to make learning more engaging, accessible and relevant to their lives.
