Inclusion and Equity Research Community

About this research community

The Inclusion and Equity Research Community is a collaborative endeavour that explores the social, cultural and educational responses to inclusion of students with diverse needs, backgrounds, and abilities, as per a broad definition of those who may experience inequities due to systemic expectations and are at risk of exclusion or marginalisation. These may include individuals who have a disability/disorder, gifted/twice exceptional learners, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, those who have a different culture and language, those living in poverty, who are migrants, or who have a different religion, among a few. Many have a variety of these characteristics which intersect to make accessing education even more difficult. Around the world, one in five children and adolescents are excluded entirely from education (UNESCO, 2025). This research community aims to generate research that explores these diversities, interrogates existing structures which perpetuate adverse situations for the individuals, and generates solutions to issues that may be experienced.

Our current key research areas include:

  • Inclusive education practices and strategies
  • The use of assistive technology to support students with disabilities
  • Technology as a therapeutic tool
  • Teacher pedagogies and practices to amplify voice/place-based voices and knowledges
  • Developing inclusive resources – disaster ready, language
  • Gifted / twice-exceptional education
  • Professional development of educators to implement inclusive practice
  • Intersectionality
  • Alternative schooling options i.e., Special Education, Homeschooling, CARE schools
  • Strength-based approaches and high learner expectations
  • Policy development
  • Mental health and wellbeing
