Adam Savin

Bachelor of Commerce, 2023

Proving that change can bring opportunity, Adam Savin followed his gut when it came to his studies.

Starting a Bachelor of Sports Science fresh from high school, Adam says he was continually drawn to finance, eventually making the switch and studying a Bachelor of Commerce at Edith Cowan University (ECU).

“I thought the change to finance was more suited to me,” Adam explains. “I really enjoyed Sports Science and it set me up well in terms of health, fitness and wellness, but I seemed to be more driven that way - helping family and friends with their finances and I was interested in property investing - so I thought I would change over to the commerce and finance degree.”

Completing a practical placement with Commonwealth Bank in his final semester, Adam says the real-world experience he gained through ECU prepared him for life after uni.

“Finance was so interesting – the personal finance and superannuation units – you could actually apply it all in real life,” he says.

“The commerce degree was pretty hands on and pushed you out of your comfort zone – I had always hated public speaking, but it made you get out there and actually talk to people. And I think that's helped along the way, because the more people I've spoken to, the more opportunities I’ve seemed to get.”

It has been a rapid career progression for Adam since graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce in 2023. After finishing his placement in banking, Adam secured a role as a broker’s assistant with a national mortgage broking firm.

“I had worked at Commonwealth Bank in the city, and that set me up and gave me a good base,” Adam says. “I think banking is a good start for finance. It just gives you a gist of everything that's going on and a more broad understanding.

“But I wanted to move into property and finance broking and that was where the journey began. So I moved on to a company as a broker's assistant at Fundd, which was a good learning curve, and I learned a lot with them.”

Adam then moved to his current position with property management company Vivid Property Perth, heading up a new financial arm, Vivid Financial.

“Vivid Property is a pretty large company in Perth and they wanted to branch out into finance as well to present a full service model to their clients,” Adam says.

“I didn't think I'd get a chance to build a company with the directors there that had a lot of experience, so I jumped at the opportunity.

“Given I was 24 at the time, it was great to see how to build a business from scratch and get to know the ins and outs of setting up a company, because it’s a new entity as such, but it's still backed by a property company.”

Thoroughly enjoying his role as head finance broker, Adam says the highlight is seeing people realise their dream of securing their own home.

“The most enjoyable part is seeing people secure their finance and get that property,” he says. “Helping everyday people get into the property market, bringing them in and educating them on property and finances.”

Adam says his time at ECU helped propel him to where he is today.

“You can get into mortgage broking with a Certificate IV, but I think coming in with that bachelor’s degree, I’ve got more of a sense of finance in general.

“I think it has definitely helped me get the roles that I've got, and it definitely looked favourable on the resume.”

Adam hopes to eventually add financial planning to the business.
