The Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) ATSI Scholarship

These scholarships are designed to support postgraduate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students of outstanding research promise undertaking a higher degree by research at ECU. The scholarships are offered on the basis of academic merit and research performance. The scholarship includes a relocation allowance, tuition fee sponsorship and a stipend of $45,000 per annum paid fortnightly via electronic funds transfer.The duration of the scholarship is up to 3 years full-time for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and up to 2 years fulltime for Master by Research.

Eligibility guidelines

To be eligible applicants must have met the minimum requirement below:

  • Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin*
  • Prospective students must have applied for admission to, or received an offer for, an ECU PhD, Integrated PhD or Master by Research course.**
  • Current ECU students must be enrolled in, or have applied for admission to, the specific HDR course for which they are applying for scholarship support.

*Applicants will be required to provide evidence of their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status. This would usually take the form of confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status under the common seal of a community organisation. Where exceptional circumstances apply, statutory declarations and other forms of documentation may be considered. Original or certified copies of supporting documentation must be provided.

**If course admission applications have been submitted prior to the scholarship closing date but not assessed prior to scholarship ranking, applications will be considered. Applications for admission to the course may be held until scholarship applications have been assessed. Course and scholarship offer are likely to be issued together when the scholarship round outcome is announced, and only to applicants who are successful in receiving a scholarship offer.

You are not eligible to apply for these scholarships if any of the below apply:

  • If you do not have principal supervisor endorsement to undertake the proposed research project.
  • If your commencement date for the Doctor of Philosophy is after 05/04/2027.
  • If your commencement period for Masters by Research is after Semester 1, 2027.
