Element Zero Industry Engagement PhD Scholarship, Lithium Salts Production (2025–2030)

This scholarship supports a PhD research project focused on the development of innovative and sustainable processes for lithium salts production from spodumene using molten salt electrolyte systems. The project aims to improve extraction efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and advance next-generation mineral processing technologies. Funded through industry engagement with Element Zero, the scholarship enables the candidate to undertake high-quality, industry-relevant research while fostering strong collaboration between academia and industry. The outcomes are expected to contribute to technological innovation, improved resource efficiency, and the sustainable growth of Australia’s critical minerals sector.

Eligibility guidelines

Applicants must meet ECU PhD admission requirements and hold a relevant Master’s degree in chemical engineering, materials engineering, chemistry, or a related field.
A strong academic record and research capability are required. Prior experience in mineral processing, electrochemistry, or materials development is desirable.

Selection criteria

Selection will be based on academic merit, research experience, and alignment of the applicant’s background with the proposed project. Demonstrated knowledge or experience in mineral processing, electrochemical systems, or materials engineering will be highly regarded.
The applicant’s ability to undertake independent research and work collaboratively with industry partners will also be considered.

Terms and Conditions

The scholarship is subject to ECU’s Higher Degree by Research scholarship policies and conditions. The recipient must maintain satisfactory academic progress and comply with all university requirements.
The scholarship is funded by Element Zero and may include specific project deliverables aligned with industry objectives. Continuation of funding is subject to satisfactory performance and progress.
