The Rhodes Scholarships - Australia

When different people come together in a shared spirit, an exciting new journey begins. The Rhodes Scholarship is a life-changing postgraduate opportunity to join outstanding young people from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. Each year, Western Australia chooses one of the 9 Rhodes Scholars from Australia who are selected to study at Oxford. 105 Rhodes Scholars selected from 60 specific countries every year, including two Global Scholars from any other country. Rhodes Scholars have been selected from Australia since 1903. Now over 5,000 Rhodes Scholars worldwide, part of a global network.

At a glance

What does the Scholarship provide?

  • All Oxford University and College fees
  • The University application fee
  • Annual stipend from which Scholars pay all living expenses, including accommodation
  • Private health insurance & Visa fees
  • One economy class airfare to Oxford at the start and one economy flight home country at the conclusion

In addition, the Rhodes Program provides at Oxford:

  • CHARACTER, SERVICE & LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME
    Individual development with your fellow Rhodes Scholars
  • SKILLS WORKSHOP SESSIONS
    e.g. Problem solving, leadership, writing for impact and media training
  • SPEAKER SERIES & DISCUSSIONS
    with leading international speakers from politics, academia, commerce
  • INTERNSHIPS
    within a wide range of organisations
  • CULTURAL EXCHANGES

Eligibility Guidelines

  • I am an Australian citizen or permanent resident and I have completed at least two years of schooling at an Australian secondary school.
  • I am aged 18-24 on 1 October 2025 (i.e. born after 1 October 2000 and before 2 October 2007) OR
    I will be under the age of 27 on 1st October 2025 (i.e. born after 1 October 1998) AND I completed my first undergraduate degree on or after 1 July 2024
  • By July 2026 I will have completed an undergraduate degree with First Class Honours [AQF Level 8] or a Masters degree [AQF Level 9], or equivalent*.  (Indicative GPA of > 6.75/7 or WAM 80% or equivalent)   [*some exceptions]
  • I may only apply once more if I have been unsuccessful/withdrawn a previous application, and only in the same jurisdiction.

Selection Criteria

  • Academic excellence,  and ability to meet the entry requirements to Oxford
  • Energy to use one’s talents to the full, demonstrated by [e.g.] mastery in sports, music, debate, dance, arts, particularly where teamwork is involved
  • Truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship.
  • Moral force of character, and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one's fellow human beings

How to apply

Applications must be submitted on The Rhodes Scholarships for Australia | Rhodes Trust with the following documentation.

  • your academic record
  • an academic statement of study
  • a personal statement
  • a full CV
  • details of 5 referees (of whom 3 are academic). The referees must be consulted well ahead of the deadline.

Applications open on 2 June 2025 and close 12 August 2025 at 11.59 pm AEST.
