Risk assessment and management plan

You are required to do a risk assessment at the beginning of your research degrees or once you have a clear idea of your research proposal.

A risk assessment needs to demonstrate that you are aware of the risks of activities associated with your proposed research.

Your risk assessment should be submitted to either your School Honours Coordinator or the Graduate Research School once agreed with your supervisor

The Project management plan

A management plan, which can be modified during the life of the thesis or project, should be drawn up in consultation with your supervisor to plan ways to mitigate the identified risks.

In drawing up a plan you will need to:

  • list all of the major activities that will have to take place to complete the thesis or project;
  • make an estimate of the time it is anticipated to complete the research thesis or project;
  • assign to each event or activity an estimate of time and a completion date;
  • identify those events or deadlines, which are critical to the completion of the thesis or project;
  • identify periods when few activities are taking place and determine what productive activities can be undertaken then.

It is helpful to identify the date of submission of the bound thesis or project and make a timeline working back from this deadline. This is particularly important for an Honours thesis where the research and the thesis or project is to be completed in less than a year.

The plan should be discussed with your supervisor to determine its adequacy and should be reviewed periodically to ensure its continued relevance and achievability.
