SOAR Centre

The SOAR Centres were established in 2009 as a free, peer-to-peer service open to all higher degree by research and honours candidates. The SOAR Centres are staffed by SOAR Peer Advisers: HDR by research students who provide research skills and research software support based on their own experiences as HDR research student peers.  SOAR Peer Advisers also act as mentors: breaking down the isolation often associated with undertaking a research degree. The Centre’s deep concern for equity and diversity has seen it successfully cater for the needs of international students from over fifty different countries.

SOAR stands for:

  • Support
  • Opportunities
  • Advice
  • Resources

SOAR Peer Advisers

At the core of the service are our SOAR Peer Advisers. These higher degree by research candidates offer one-to-one appointments and group workshops on a variety of topics to support candidates throughout their research journey. These include:

  • getting started  as a research student, e.g. adjusting to cultural change, work-life balance, and time-management;
  • research software, e.g. SPSS, R, Qualtrics,  NVivo;
  • understanding research methodologies;
  • Microsoft Office suite, e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint;
  • data collection and analysis;
  • presentation skills and communicating your research; and
  • ethics application process.
