SOAR Centre

The SOAR Centre was established in 2009 as a free service to enrich and add value to the academic and social lives of ECU’s higher degree by research and honours candidates.

SOAR stands for:

  • Support
  • Opportunities
  • Advice
  • Resources

Since it was started, the program has had an unprecedented impact on the University’s research community. Its popularity is due to the unique peer-to-peer approach to support and research training and our desire to break down the isolation normally associated with undertaking a research degree.

The Centre’s deep concern for equity and diversity has seen it successfully cater for the needs of international students from over fifty different countries.

For the hundreds of domestic and international candidates now accessing the services every year, SOAR is an essential meeting point for one-to-one or group discussions, support and collaboration. The Centre connects research students from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, ages and academic disciplines.

More information about the origin of the SOAR Centre can be found in the paper, ‘A peer-to-peer support model for developing graduate students’ career and employability skills’.

SOAR Peer Advisers

At the core of the service are our SOAR Peer Advisers. These higher degree by research students offer one-to-one appointments and group workshops on a variety of topics to support students throughout their research journey. These include:

  • life as a research student, e.g. adjusting to cultural change, work-life balance;
  • research software, e.g. SPSS, Endnote, NVivo;
  • academic writing and formatting, e.g. literature reviews, research proposals;
  • understanding research methodologies;
  • Microsoft Office suite, e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint;
  • IT troubleshooting;
  • data collection and analysis;
  • presentation skills and communicating your research;
  • ethics application process; and
  • career planning tools.

There is a SOAR Centre on our Joondalup and Mount Lawley campuses, open 10.00am-4.00pm, Monday to Friday during semester.
