Bilya Boorn Scholarship

The Bilya Boorn Scholarship was established in 2024 and is a joint initiative of a number of major WA commercial law firms to provide scholarships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to study law at a Western Australian university. A scholarship to support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students to study law – whether online, as an undergraduate, post-graduate, or as part of a double degree.

  • A minimum of $5,000 in financial assistance for at least two years
  • Ongoing opportunities for professional networking and mentoring throughout the scholarship term and beyond.

Eligibility guidelines

To be eligible for this scholarship you must:

  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident who:
    • is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent;
    • identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; and
    • is accepted as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander in the community in which he or she lives or has lived.
  • reside or intend to reside in Western Australia at the time of undertaking their studies;
  • be enrolled, or eligible to enrol in the equivalent of at least 2 full time units per semester and
  • study at or intend to study at a Western Australian university including;
    • The University of Western Australia, Murdoch University, Edith Cowan University, Curtin University or The Notre Dame University of Australia (Fremantle), but applicants may undertake limited study at another university, abroad or on a student exchange program as part of the course of study at the Western Australian University.

Selection criteria

Criteria for selection is based on a consideration of the following:

  • financial hardship and/or personal circumstances (such as but not limited to the types of matters set out in the TISC EAS guidelines);
  • satisfactory academic standing;
  • community engagement; and
  • other achievements or information the applicant may wish to provide.

Overall the scholarship is based on equity considerations in preference to academic achievements.

Applications must be submitted by the advertised closing date (Thursday 28 March 2024) and may be lodged by:
