ECU-SCIA Neuromoves PhD Industry Scholarship

Our research team at the Exercise Medicine Research Institute at Edith Cowan University are recruiting a high-quality candidate interested in pursuing a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) embedded within our NeuroMoves Clinic, a partnership with Spinal Cord Injuries Australia. The project will be determined in consultation with the supervision team, Spinal Cord Injuries Australia, and the successful candidate but within the following broad area: Evaluation of a clinic-based, resistance and cardiorespiratory exercise program for people with neurological disorders to assess health benefits with emphasis on cardiovascular, metabolic, skeletal, and neuromuscular outcomes. You will be based at the NeuroMoves Clinic and Exercise Medicine Research Institute at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia supervised by leaders in the field of exercise medicine and neuroscience.

At a glance

The Exercise Medicine Research Institute at Edith Cowan University (ECU) has been collaborating with Spinal Cord Injury Australia (SCIA) for the past 10 years to implement and research an exercise medicine program to support people with neurological disorders. Neuromoves is a multi-therapy program aiming to improve neural, muscular, skeletal, and metabolic health through innovative exercise prescriptions. ECU and SCIA operate a busy clinic on the University’s Joondalup campus in Perth, Western Australia support people with a range of neurological disorders including spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinsons, multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease and others. An extensive research program is funded by SCIA and this includes this PhD scholarship. The successful applicant will be working within the Neuromoves Clinic and Exercise Medicine Research Institute conducting research on the programs and clients.

Eligibility guidelines

To be eligible for this scholarship you must;

  • meet the PhD admission requirements at ECU;
  • be able to demonstrate strong background and competencies in exercise science, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, or medical science;
  • be able to commence by January 2024
  • Applicants should have a high level of academic achievement, including an Honours degree, Masters by Research or equivalent. The degree could be in a range of relevant fields, such as exercise science, physiotherapy, medical sciences, rehabilitation, and nursing.

Selection criteria

  • Capacity to develop a project proposal that aligns with the Neuromoves focus outlined in the project brief;
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal, communication and scientific writing skills;
  • Evidence of research level English language proficiency;
  • Have relevant experience in quantitative analysis;
  • Have knowledge or a keen interest in exercise as medicine for people with neurological disorders;
  • A strong teamwork ethic and good understanding of project management.
