Fostering Relational Leadership Capabilities in Mining: The SIGNal online training

Leaders play a crucial role in creating work environments that support wellbeing, mental health, and respect. In the mining industry, these conditions are uniquely complex, with high-intensity work pressures that demand relational leadership capabilities. Such leadership fosters empowering, ethical, and inclusive workplaces where people can thrive.

In response, the MARS Centre has developed an evidence-based online training program, SIGNaL (Supportive, Inclusive, Growth-Oriented, and New Leadership). The program is designed to strengthen specific aspects of relational leadership that are critical for building healthy workplaces in the mining sector:

  • Supportive Leadership – Developing skills to provide both emotional and practical support to team members.
  • Inclusive Leadership – Fostering a culture of belonging and respect while encouraging diverse perspectives.
  • Growth-Oriented Leadership – Promoting continuous learning, development, and performance improvement.
  • New Leadership – Exploring modern approaches, including leading flexible and hybrid teams and adapting to evolving work environments.

The SIGNaL Program is currently being piloted in the mining industry. Alongside evaluating its effectiveness, we are investigating the factors that influence program success and the transfer of learning into practice. These insights will provide mining organisations with practical guidance for program implementation and long-term impact.

The online intervention is underway, with the fully evaluated SIGNaL Program expected to be available from mid-2026. Industry stakeholders interested in learning more or in accessing the pre-pilot version are encouraged to contact the MARS Centre at mars@ecu.edu.au.
