Effectiveness of using a Capability Maturity Mode (CMM) to advance diversity, equity and inclusion in the mining sector

Organisations across industries, including mining, are increasingly recognising the value of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), with benefits ranging from improved performance and innovation to better safety outcomes, stronger social licence to operate, and greater employee attraction and retention.

Despite clear benefits progress remains slow. Effort and investment have not yet produced sustained change, leaving a gap between DEI rhetoric and practice.  Addressing this requires evidence-driven systemic, strategic and cultural transformation, something ECU MARS Centre researchers Dr Judy Lundy and Associate Professor Uma Jogulu argue can be supported through their evidence-based DEI Capability Maturity Model (CMM) which can help identify current and desired levels of maturity and plan for continuous improvement.

Sandfire Resources piloted this tool over two years, and an industry-based report has been produced. The case study demonstrates how evidence-based DEI strategies can drive meaningful and sustainable cultural change.  The case study and the MARS Centre DEI CMM are available for download, along with resources to support organisations in applying the model.
