Psychosocial Safety Climate (PSC) describes the extent to which an organisation prioritises and safeguards the mental health of its workforce. It is reflected in leadership’s commitment to preventing risks such as excessive workload, bullying, and inadequate support, and in fostering a culture where wellbeing is a core value. High PSC is associated with reduced stress, burnout, and psychological injury, alongside improved engagement, job satisfaction, and organisational performance. It also supports lower absenteeism and turnover, making PSC a critical element of effective and sustainable workplace health and safety. Read more about how your organisation can build PSC here.
This international collaborative research project, between the ECU MARS Centre, the University of South Australia, and Mälardalens University in Sweden, aims to develop an evidence-based Psychosocial Safety Climate (PSC) Maturity Model. By gathering expert input from Australia and Sweden through a structured Delphi study, the project seeks to define and describe different levels of psychosocial maturity within workplaces.
The resulting maturity model will serve as a practical tool for organisations to assess their current psychosocial safety climate and guide continuous improvement efforts. By understanding and advancing their psychosocial maturity, organisations can foster healthier, safer, and more supportive work environments that promote psychological wellbeing.
The project is expected to be completed by June 2026. Industry stakeholders interested in learning more or contributing to the project are encouraged to contact the MARS Centre at mars@ecu.edu.au.
