Reframing Fatigue in Mining

Reframing Fatigue in Mining: a scoping literature review

This report presents a comprehensive scoping review of international research on fatigue in the mining sector.

It examines how fatigue is conceptualised in mining, identifies key contributing factors, and evaluates associated health, safety, and organisational impacts, as well as current management approaches.

Fatigue is identified as a major safety risk in the mining industry, associated with incidents, injuries, mental and physical health issues, and reduced work performance. The review highlights that fatigue develops through the interaction of physical environments, work tasks, work organisation, and individual factors. It concludes that effective fatigue management requires integrated, multi-level Fatigue Risk Management Systems embedded within existing safety systems and identifies key gaps for future research, including mental health, long-term health effects, automation, and fatigue detection technologies.
