Summary of thesis:

Sleep is paramount for health. Shift workers are at-risk for poor sleep health and sleep disorders. Shift workers in extractive industries often sleep on-site. Therefore, evaluating their sleep environment is crucial. Furthermore, lifestyle factors (sleep behaviour), such as alcohol consumption, can negatively impact sleep. The overarching aim is; to investigate the influence of sleep behaviour (lifestyle) and environment on sleep health and sleep disorders of shift workers in extractive industries. A cross-sectional survey design will be employed for study one and study two. An observational study design will be employed for study three and study four, using objective measures.
