Summary of thesis:

Arterial stiffness (AS) is currently considered strongly associated with the occurrence and development of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), a validated indicator for AS, calculated as log (triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol), is potentially a potent predictor for future incidence of CVDs or T2DM. Study aims: 1) to investigate the correlation between AIP and incident CVDs and T2DM in a large community-based cohort in China (Kailuan study); 2) to identify AS-related variants in the Han Chinese population by genome-wide association study. This project will unravel the genetic basis of AS and discover new markers for identifying the highest-risk patients for developing T2DM and CVDs and improving early aggressive interventions.
