TRACS Migration Research Network (MRN)

The ECU TRACS Migration Research Network (MRN) is a research entity based in the School of Arts and Humanities. It is an inclusive and expansive university-wide network that brings together scholars of migration (broadly defined) through weekly masterclasses and seminars, regular meetings and activities.

ECU TRACS MRN members conduct research relating to migration, diversity, multiculturalism, and related fields from a range of disciplines, including topics that relate to:

  • Integration and Inclusion in Plural Societies
  • Mobile/Digital Lives and Transnational/Translocal Communities
  • Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) Services across the life course

ECU TRACS MRN activities include:

  • Co-hosting the annual WA Migration and Mobilities Update Conference with the other WA universities
  • Supporting an active program of national and international collaborations in relevant fields
  • Hosting the 2024 Migration Update Conference at ECU
  • Holding a seminar series to feature ECU and visiting scholar research
  • Facilitating an active research environment in transnational and migration studies

ECU TRACS MRN is supported by an establishment committee comprising staff and HDR students from the School of Arts and Humanities.

Professor Loretta Baldassar

Professor Loretta Baldassar is Vice Chancellor Professorial Research Fellow and Director of the Social Ageing (SAGE) Futures Lab. She also leads the TRACS Migration Research Network at ECU to support an active program of national and international collaborations.

Associate Professor Justine Dandy

Associate Professor Justine Dandy is Academic Coordinator, HDR Programs for the School of Arts and Humanities and Associate Director of the Centre for People, Place and Planet. Her research is on acculturation, intercultural relations in plural societies and the nexus between place attachment, environmental change and mobility.

Dr Jamal Barnes

Dr Jamal Barnes is a Lecturer in Criminology in the School of Arts and Humanities. His research focuses on human rights issues, such as refugee and asylum movements, torture, and the international human rights framework. He is the author of the book, A Genealogy of the Torture Taboo.

Dr Catriona Stevens

Dr Catriona Stevens is a Vice Chancellor’s Research Fellow in the School of Arts and Humanities. She is a sociologist and anthropologist with expertise in labour migration, social class and migration, migrant aged care workforce issues, and ageing and transnational caregiving.

Yu (Yvonne) Huang

Yvonne is a PhD candidate in the Social Ageing (SAGE) Futures Lab. Her research delves into the dynamic intergenerational relationships of Chinese migrant families in Australia and Canada. She currently serves as ECU TRACS MRN Research Administrator.

Abraham Kenin

Abraham Kenin is a PhD candidate in Psychology in the School of Arts and Humanities. His research is on acculturation and mental health outcomes among Sub-Saharan African youth in Australia.
