Our research

The ECU SAGE Futures Lab leads innovation in social and cultural care through collaborative research, consultancies, evaluation, the development of interventions, knowledge and good practice exchange. Grounded in the theories and practice of social science our streams incorporate collaborations from cognate disciplines including psychology and occupational therapy.

Diverse Ageing: Migration and Identities

Our research addresses the opportunities and challenges of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) care needs in the increasingly diverse Australian population. People from CALD backgrounds are at a greater risk of becoming socially isolated, with negative consequences for their health and wellbeing.

Projects:

Inclusive Ageing: Social Care Policy and Practice

We are developing evidence-based practice and policy to support the adoption of sustainable socio-cultural models of care in the aged care sector. We have a particular focus on the abuse of older adults, dementia care in the community and innovative models of social care service delivery.

Projects:

Digital Ageing: Virtual and Transnational Lives

This research stream focuses on developing and evaluating the role of social technologies, including digital and virtual technologies in creating and supporting social connection. Digital literacy for older people is increasingly important to improve access to services, reduce social isolation and loneliness, and promote digital citizenship.

Projects:

Positive Ageing: Psychology and Health

Our team brings together expertise in developmental psychology, social psychology, neuropsychology, healthy ageing, and research methodologies. Adopting a Bio-Psycho-Social framework, a strength approach and a lifespan perspective on ageing, this research stream aims to enrich the body of knowledge, inform policy, education, and the community to support positive and healthy ageing.

Optimal Ageing: Restoration, Productivity, and Pleasure for Social Health

This research stream advances interdisciplinary research on engagement, connection, daily doing, and supportive environments that enable older adults and communities to flourish socially, functionally, and meaningfully across the life course. We examine how social health, recognised as a core pillar of wellbeing, can be strengthened to support optimal ageing, inform practice and policy, and enhance quality of life across the lifespan.
