Peer Leader Program

The Peer Leader Program is designed to support new undergraduate students as they begin their university journey. By connecting first-semester students with experienced peers from the same school, the program fosters a welcoming and supportive environment that encourages both academic and personal success.

The program focuses on:

  • Building social connections to ease the transition into university life for new students.
  • Sharing insights and experiences to help new students navigate ECU.
  • Creating a sense of belonging within the ECU community.
  • Building future leaders as Peer Leaders develop professionally and personally.

By participating in the Peer Leader Program, new students gain valuable guidance, while Peer Leaders develop leadership, communication, and mentoring skills.

All commencing undergraduate students are automatically enrolled in the Peer Leader Program Canvas site, where they can access resources, connect with Peer Leaders and each other, and request one-on-one mentoring support.

Mentoring groups are led by these later-year students, who have volunteered and trained to be mentors. Groups meet several times during the semester in person and online to chat about their university experiences. This blended model of group and individual mentoring ensures that all new students have multiple opportunities to engage, ask questions, and feel supported throughout their transition to university life.

How to get involved:

  • as a mentee, if you are new to ECU or feel like you would benefit from some peer support
  • as a leader, if you are a second year student or above, and would like to provide peer support and guidance to new students
