Peer Leaders play a vital role in helping new students transition smoothly into university life. They support a small group of first-year students, by sharing practical tips, offering guidance, and encouraging them to thrive in their academic journey.
Key elements of the program include:
- Mentoring Groups: Peer Leaders facilitate school-based mentoring groups via the Canvas site, regularly posting advice, insights, and tips to help new students navigate their first semester.
- One-on-One Support: Students can request a dedicated Peer Leader for individual mentoring. Peer Leaders are expected to check in with their mentees weekly and arrange at least one catch-up—either in person or online—offering flexible and accessible support.
Benefits for Peer Leaders:
- Leadership Development: Strengthen their leadership, communication, and employability skills.
- Community Contribution: Make a positive impact by supporting new students in their transition to university.
- Networking Opportunities: Connect with fellow Peer Leaders and expand their university and professional network.
- Reflective Growth: Share their own student journey and gain new perspectives through mentoring.
- Professional Recognition: Receive a Peer Leadership Program Certificate and a LinkedIn recommendation upon successful completion.
To apply, you must:
- Be a current student in at least your second year.
- Maintain good academic standing.
- Demonstrate ECU’s core values.
Eligible students will be contacted each semester and invited to apply.
