Combatting Workplace Bullying and Incivility

Workplace bullying and incivility remain significant challenges in the mining industry. These behaviours are often deeply embedded in organisational culture and cannot be effectively addressed through policy alone. Research demonstrates that the most successful approaches are multi-faceted and tailored to the unique needs of each organisation.

To support this, the Workplace Bullying & Incivility (WBI) Capability Maturity Model (CMM) Toolkit was developed for Western Australian mining organisations. The Toolkit enables organisations to assess their current practices and build proactive, system-wide strategies to prevent and manage workplace bullying and incivility.

An evaluation study in the mining sector found that the Toolkit not only facilitated meaningful stakeholder engagement but also opened constructive dialogue on these issues. The findings highlight the Toolkit’s potential as a transformative resource for mining organisations, helping to create safer, more respectful, and more productive workplaces.
