International Clinical Placements

The School of Nursing andMidwifery offers international clinical placements each year to a group of nursing and midwiferystudents in Cambodia, India, Nepal, Laos, Philippines, Tanzania and Thailand. Typically,students enrolled in their final year are eligible to apply.

The purpose of internationalclinical placements is to enable students to expand their knowledge andunderstanding of cultural awareness within the health care arena.  This opportunity also supports their practicewhen they return to Australia and take up a position as a Registered Nurse or Midwife inAustralia or internationally. Within this program, the nursesand midwives are encouraged to explore and understand the health care system of their hostcountries, including observing the following types of activities:

  • How nursing and midwifery training is conducted.
  • What types of nursing and midwifery medical challenges present to the emergency department, intensive care, birthing suites and paediatric wards and how they are managed.
  • How outpatient services are conducted, with a view to seeing how primary health care meets the hospital system.

Working in collaboration with the localhealth district and public hospital, students divide their time betweenshadowing and supporting local nursing and midwifery staff on the hospitalwards and providing primary health care to outlying communities as part of thehospital’s outreach program.
