International Clinical Placements

The School of Nursing and Midwifery offers international clinical placements each year to a group of nursing and midwifery students.

In 2019 placements are offered in Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Philippines, South Africa, Tanzania, Vietnam and Malawi for Nursing students. The Philippines, China and Tanzania for Midwifery students. Typically, students enrolled in their final year are eligible to apply.

The purpose of international clinical placements is to enable students to expand their knowledge and understanding of cultural awareness within the health care arena.  This opportunity also supports their practice when they return to Australia and take up a position as a Registered Nurse or Midwife in Australia or internationally. Please view the image galleries below for examples of some international clinical placements:

Within this program, the nurses and midwives are encouraged to explore and understand the health care system of their host countries, including observing the following types of activities:

  • How nursing and midwifery training is conducted.
  • What types of nursing and midwifery medical challenges present to the emergency department, intensive care, birthing suites and paediatric wards and how they are managed.
  • How outpatient services are conducted, with a view to seeing how primary health care meets the hospital system.

Working in collaboration with the local health district and public hospital, students divide their time between shadowing and supporting local nursing and midwifery staff on the hospital wards and providing primary health care to outlying communities as part of the hospital’s outreach program.
