Since 2018 ECU’s School of Nursing and Midwifery has been running an extended immersive ward-based simulation program pioneered by Dr Hugh Davies for final semester nursing students. It was developed in recognition that some nursing students find the challenge of transitioning to professional practice difficult. The creation of a ward with a collection of simulated patients allows final semester students to practice the role of being a Registered Nurse.

Following a presentation of the program to an audience of health practitioners interested in simulation-based education, he was approached by Dr Kate Jutsum, senior lecturer from the School of Medicine at UWA, if final year medical students could join the program and role being the Intern as part of an interprofessional learning opportunity. A collaborative approach saw a revision of existing patient scenarios and associated clinical stories to ensure learning objectives for both health disciplines could be realised. This semester has seen the realisation of our collaboration and the introduction of final year medical students into the program who are supported by medical facilitators. The program has created a great learning opportunity for both medical and nursing students to learn from each other on what will be expected of them once they graduate from university.

The program is being evaluated using a pre-test and post-test study design to measure the impact on student learning of a simulated interprofessional learning activity, with the research project supported by a Teaching and Learning grant sponsored by the School of Nursing and Midwifery. This initiative is part of several in the simulation space of a wider strategic plan developed by the school’s Simulation Innovation Team (SIT).
