Dr Gertrude Phiri

Dr Gertude Phiri is a Research Scholar, Lecturer and Unit Coordinator within the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

Background

Dr Phiri began her nursing career in Zambia, and has practiced as a registered nurse for over 30 years. Whilst in Zambia, Gertrude provided training within an HIV/AIDS focused Non-Governmental Organisation. As part of the training team, she supported home-based care volunteers and managed a hospice that provided respite for family carers.

Gertrude relocated to Australia in 2003 where she worked in Aged Care as a senior nurse in clinical governance while also mentoring nurses in clinical practice until 2023. Gertrude joined ECU in 2022 as a sessional academic, adding Research Assistant to her role in 2024.

In 2024, Dr Phiri achieved her PhD with ECU in palliative and end-of-life care for the migrant population in Australia.
