Work Integrated Learning

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is described in any number of ways across the university sector in Australia, but at its core WIL is any learning activity or program that provides students with industry experience. Examples of industry experience can include:

  • Guest lecturers by industry representatives
  • Industry suggested projects completed on-campus
  • Industry or community volunteering
  • Short term placements
  • Industry embedded placements or internships

WIL in the School of Science

The School of Science provides all these WIL opportunities in one form or another, with industry embedded WIL placements considered the ultimate destination for students seeking to engage with industry prior to graduation. Students who meet eligibility requirements can spend their final semester in a full-time industry embedded placement with an industry partner, be it a commercial, government or not-for-profit agency.

Eligibility requirements vary from course to course, but at a minimum students should be in their final year of study, be in a course which has WIL in its structure and have been through an interview process before being granted entry into the WIL program.

Other short-term WIL opportunities or industry inspired projects are available in several project and research units.
