Dr Bee Lam

Dr Bee Lam is a Senior Lecturer in Statistics in the School of Science at Edith Cowan University and Course Coordinator for the Master of Data Science program. She brings extensive experience from both academia and industry, with expertise in statistics, mathematics, data science, risk analytics, and quantitative modelling. Her research interests include statistics education, data science education, simulation-based learning, and the use of educational technology to enhance teaching and learning in higher education.

Background

Dr Lam has more than 20 years of experience teaching statistics and mathematics in higher education. She is committed to making complex quantitative concepts accessible and engaging through student-centred and technology-enhanced learning approaches that foster statistical thinking, data literacy, and problem-solving skills.

As Course Coordinator for the Master of Data Science, Dr Lam provides academic leadership in curriculum development, course design, and quality assurance, ensuring graduates develop strong analytical capabilities and industry-relevant skills for careers in data science and analytics.

Her scholarship includes the design and evaluation of innovative learning technologies and simulation-based activities to support the development of statistical thinking, data literacy, and quantitative reasoning. She has developed a range of interactive web-based learning applications that use simulation and data visualisation to enhance student engagement and understanding of complex statistical and data science concepts.

Prior to joining academia, Dr Lam held senior analytics and risk management roles in the banking and resources sectors, including positions with Deutsche Bank, BHP, and Bankwest. Her professional experience in statistical modelling, risk analysis, and decision analytics informs her teaching and research, enabling her to connect theory with authentic industry practice.

Professional Service and Engagement

Dr Lam is a member of the School of Science Curriculum Teaching and Learning Committee and the School of Science Course Consultative Committee, contributing to curriculum quality, student learning, assessment practices, continuous improvement, and industry engagement.

She also serves on the Review Panel for the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA) Annual Conference 2026, supporting the advancement of research and scholarship in mathematics education.

As part of the School of Science STEM Learning Program, Dr Lam developed and delivers an innovative motorsport-themed outreach project in which secondary school students design, race, and analyse the performance of LEGO® Formula 1 cars. Through hands-on investigation and data analysis, students explore concepts in mathematics, statistics, engineering, speed, and acceleration while developing an interest in STEM disciplines and careers.
