Syed is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science and a member of the Low-risk Ethics and Academic Study Leave Evaluation committees in the School of Science. He is also the Lead of the 3D sensing, visualization, and analytics (3DSVA) Lab and a founding member of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

Background

Dr Syed M. Shamsul Islam is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at Edith Cowan University (ECU), a founding member of the Centre for AI and Machine Learning, and lead of the 3D Sensing, Visualisation and Analytics (3DSVA) Lab. His multidisciplinary research spans artificial intelligence, computer vision, medical imaging, robotics, bioinformatics and environmental monitoring, with particular expertise in the analysis of 2D and 3D imaging and sensing data and the translation of computational methods into real-world applications.

Dr Islam completed his PhD with Distinction in Computer Engineering at The University of Western Australia. He has supervised 16 Higher Degree by Research students to completion, published more than 120 scholarly articles, and contributed to research attracting over A$7 million in competitive and collaborative funding. His research has received substantial academic and public attention, including more than 5,400 citations and extensive media coverage.

His contributions have been recognised through awards including ECU's High Achieving Researcher Award. Dr Islam is an Associate Editor of IEEE Access, an IEEE Senior Member, and an active reviewer for leading computer vision conferences including CVPR, ECCV and WACV, as well as numerous Q1 journals.
