Syed is a Senior Lecturer of Computer Science and a Member of Low-risk Ethics and Grants Evaluation sub-committees in the School of Science, and a University Contact Officer (UCO) in the Office of Pro-Vice Chancellor (Equity and Indigenous).

Background
Dr Islam completed his PhD with Distinction in Computer Engineering from the University of Western Australia (UWA) in 2011. He received his MSc in Computer Engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in 2005 and BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Islamic Institute of Technology in 2000. Prior to joining ECU in 2016, he was a Research Assistant Professor at UWA (2011-2015), a Research Fellow at Curtin University (2013-2015), and a casual Lecturer at UWA and Curtin University (2015-2016). He was also an Adjunct Lecturer at UWA from 2016 to 2019. He has published over 60 research articles and got 15 public media releases including a TV news story and four live radio interviews. He has received the NHMRC Ideas grant 2019 ($467K) and nine other external research grants. He supervised to completion three HDR students and currently supervising 12 others. He is serving as an Associate Editor of IEEE Access and a guest editor of Healthcare, Technical Committee Member of 25 conferences and regular reviewer of 26 journals. He is also involved in various professional and community activities including the IEEE WA Signal Processing Chapter, the Game Changer Awards, Science Café and Clean Up Australia.
