Overview of thesis

Masters by Research in Marine and Freshwater Biology student researching seagrass restoration and the associated recovery of the ecosystem services provided by and associated with seagrass meadows (i.e. carbon sequestration, sediment stabilisation, fisheries). This project will assess the restoration efforts of two persistent seagrass species (Amphibolis antarctica and Posidonia sinuosa) in the metropolitan coastal waters of Adelaide, South Australia, and how this restoration has influenced blue carbon stocks and sequestration rates, and other ecosystem services provided by the meadows. The research aims to:

  • Assess if successful seagrass restoration results in the recovery of the ecosystem services associated with and provided by meadows; and
  • Determine the effect of short- and long-term seagrass restoration on blue carbon stocks and sequestration rates;

To successfully achieve these aims, a collaborative effort between the Centre for Marine Ecosystems Research (CMER) and the School of Science, the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), and South Australian (SA) Water is required. By conducting this research, we will be contributing to the global knowledge gap present involving seagrass restoration and blue carbon recovery potential – an important function to understand for climate change mitigation.
