A film by students from the WA Screen Academy at Edith Cowan University (ECU) has taken home a WA Screen Culture Award for the third year in a row.

The Screen Culture Award for Innovation in Student Film is one of the highest accolades for a student filmmaker. The 2023 award was won by the film School Makes Me, directed by Alex Power, produced by Lora Ntounia and Nicholas Watson and edited by Alan Chambers.

Two other WA Screen Academy films were also nominated for the WA Screen Culture Innovation in Student Film Award:

  • Dare to Dream directed and edited by Alan Chambers and produced by Emma Jackson.
  • Melody of Life directed and co-produced by Bethany A’Vard and co-produced by Susie Garcia.

The three films were produced in 2022 as part of the Master of Screen Studies course at WA Screen Academy where students produce a range of screen projects, including documentaries.

WA Screen Academy students dominate nominations

Students from WA Screen Academy dominated this year’s film industry awards, making up half of all nominations in the student categories for both the WA Screen Culture Awards and the Australian Screen Editors Guild Ellie Awards for 2023.

Associate Professor Cathy Henkel, the Director of WA Screen Academy and a highly-awarded and renowned documentary filmmaker, said the recognition of student work is well-deserved.

“I’m thrilled to see our students recognised for their outstanding work in documentary filmmaking,” she said.

“WA Screen Academy students have featured every year of the WA Screen Culture Awards and have taken home more than a few awards.”

WA Screen Academy students also make up two of the four nominations for AFTRS Award for the Most Outstanding Student Editor, at this year’s Australian Screen Editors Guild’s Ellie Awards. Alan Chambers and Hamish Paterson were selected from a highly competitive pool of student editors around the country, with more entries this year than ever before.

The prize includes mentorship from the Oscar nominee Matt Villa ASE (Elvis, The Great Gatsby) and Emmy winner Rachel Grierson Johns (Love on the Spectrum, War on Waste).

Winners will be announced at the Ellie Awards in Sydney on Saturday, 2 December.
