Sanjay Kumar Shukla currently serves as the Civil Engineering Discipline Coordinator and Founding Leader of the Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering Research Group at the School of Civil Engineering, Edith Cowan University, Perth, Australia. He also served as the Founding Program Leader of the Discipline of Civil Engineering from April 2009 to December 2018. Prior to joining Edith Cowan University, he held academic positions at several Indian institutions, including the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi, India. He has also served as a visiting scholar at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University for several months between 2002 and 2005, and at James Cook University, Townsville, Australia, for six months in 2008. Since 2014, he has been the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Geosynthetics and Ground Engineering, published by Springer Nature, Switzerland. He holds Distinguished Professorships at several universities, including the esteemed Delhi Technological University, Delhi, India, and Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, USA. He is a Chartered Professional Engineer (Civil and Geotechnical) registered with Engineers Australia, holds the designation of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Engineer in Civil Engineering, and is recognised as an International Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering by the International Engineering Alliance. Dr Shukla is a Distinguished Fellow of both the American Society of Civil Engineers and Engineers Australia. He also serves on the editorial boards of several international journals. He has made substantial contributions to academic literature, authoring 28 books and over 335 articles. He has been consistently recognised among the world’s top 2% of scientists by Elsevier and ranks in the top 0.5% globally according to ScholarGPS. His Research Interest Score on ResearchGate is higher than 99% of its members. Dr Shukla’s research, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, is widely cited and applied globally. His outstanding contributions have earned him numerous prestigious honours, including the 2025 Editorial Contribution Award from Springer Nature, the 2024 Distinguished Honour from the Consulate General of India in Perth for his contributions to geotechnical engineering, the 2021 ECU Aspire Award, and the highly esteemed 2018 IGS Award from the International Geosynthetics Society, USA. His groundbreaking work, such as the generalised expressions for seismic active thrust (2015) and passive resistance (2013), as well as the innovative Shukla’s wraparound reinforcement technique, has become integral to engineering education and is widely applied by engineers around the world. His Seven Research Mantras, introduced in 2022, have been influential in promoting sustainable and high-quality research practices globally. Dr Shukla actively collaborates with leading universities, research institutions, industries, and professionals worldwide on academic, field-based, and consulting projects, offering expert solutions to complex geotechnical challenges. His broad expertise and impactful contributions have significantly advanced the global practice of civil engineering. A highly respected speaker, he is frequently invited to deliver keynote addresses and conduct short courses internationally.
