Alireza Keshavarz is an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering at Edith Cowan University and an internationally recognised researcher in sustainable energy and energy-transition technologies. His academic career combines research leadership, engineering education, industry engagement and academic governance.
Since joining ECU in 2016, Alireza has held a range of senior academic leadership roles, including Interim Associate Dean Academic, Acting Associate Dean Research, Acting Director International for the School of Engineering, and Discipline Coordinator across several engineering programs. Through these roles, he has contributed to curriculum development and transformation, academic quality and accreditation, research strategy, HDR development, international engagement and staff leadership.
His research focuses on engineering solutions for the global energy transition, particularly carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), hydrogen production and storage, natural hydrogen/Helium production, subsurface energy systems and CO₂ mineralisation. He has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications, predominantly in leading international journals, and has established an extensive externally funded research program involving industry, government and national and international research organisations. His research emphasises translation from fundamental laboratory investigation and modelling towards practical and field-scale applications.
Alireza is also strongly committed to research training and the development of future researchers and engineers. His research-led teaching and HDR supervision connect students with contemporary engineering challenges, advanced research infrastructure and industry-relevant applications.
Prior to joining ECU, Alireza worked as a Research Scientist within CSIRO’s Energy Business Unit, where his research focused on subsurface energy resources and CO₂ sequestration. His academic leadership is characterised by a collaborative and people-centred approach, with a strong commitment to academic quality, student success, staff development and strengthening ECU’s research and educational capability in areas critical to the energy transition.
