Feeding Frenzy

How can we move students beyond memorising food chains and into thinking like ecologists? Feeding Frenzy is an active, role-playing game designed for secondary students that uses movement and repetition to model energy transfer through food webs and explore the impact of humans and introduced species on the ecosystem.

Alongside the downloadable resources, you will need:

  • A whistle
  • 150-200 wrist bands or clothes pegs
  • Oval, basketball court, or other large open space to safely run

Spreading Sparks

How can we help students understand the factors that influence fire behaviour? Spreading Sparks is a cooperative board game where up to four players place barriers like rivers, roads, and rocky outcrops to reduce the spread of fire in an environment after lightning strikes. After setup, players draw condition and ignition cards determining wind direction, fire danger rating, and fire starting points before letting the fire tokens spread across the board. Teams then compare their outcomes with the rest of the class to see whose environment resulted in the least fire spread.

Alongside the downloadable resources, you will need:

  • Coloured tokens/counters to mark the fire and lightning strikes
  • Split pin to attach wind direction arrow to the game board
  • Ziplock bags to store the smaller game components for each board game
