This year, seven applications were received for the School of Science Early Career and New Staff grants and were assessed by the School Scholarship and Research Assessment Committee. This committee is comprised of 8 staff members representing our two disciplines including early-mid career, senior and executive staff.

Congratulations to the following four applicants who were awarded the grant. Dr Rachele Bernasconi whose project will compare eDNA and morphometric methods to identify benthic diatoms in mine pit lakes; Dr Uptal Bose whose research will lead to an understanding of the impacts of drought stress on wheat grain protein quality; Dr Anna Lafratta who will assess if seagrass meadows are a sink for perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFAS) and Dr Mekhala Vithana whose project will investigate the effect of pre- and postharvest application of chemical elicitors on the levels of health-promoting phytochemicals in cold stored sweet orange fruit.

The School is looking forward to seeing the outcomes of these diverse and interesting projects.
