The WA Agricultural Research Collaboration is a new agricultural science collaboration that brings together the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University and the University of Western Australia.

The Collaboration will build on current research efforts to harness and apply cutting edge science and expertise to Western Australia’s unique challenges and opportunities and contribute to national and international agricultural priorities. It will also support WA primary producers to adopt new agricultural technologies across grains, livestock and irrigated agriculture.

Backed by $25 million in State Government investment over three years, matched by support from the institutions the funding aims to secure more than $50 million in additional investment from funders – making this an anticipated more than $100 million program for WA agricultural research.

Programs

  • Northern Agriculture: Increasing the gross value of production through intensification of Agriculture by 2030 focusing on sustainable growth of irrigated agriculture and the northern beef industry.
  • Grains Transformation: Transforming the WA grains industry to achieve an average 25 million tonne crop per annum by 2035, achieved with 50% increase in fertiliser, crop protection and fuel input use efficiency.
  • Climate Resilience: Addressing the impacts of climate change through technologies to deliver future landscapes that maintain agricultural productivity while reducing carbon emissions by 50% by 2035.
  • Agricultural Technologies: Driving 20% improvement in margins of the leading 10% of producers by 2035.
  • Aboriginal Participation: Doubling Aboriginal employment in agriculture by 2035 including direct participation in agricultural businesses.
  • Capacity Building and Extension: Encouraging and supporting WA growers to apply research outcomes in the paddock.

The WA Agricultural Research Collaboration is expected to be fully operational by early 2023.
