Passion for the field, people you meet and the things you learn along the way create inspirational leaders. Michelle and Zoe are both Digital Technology educators who volunteer their time to be tutors for the Girls’ Programming Network (GPN). A great weekend program that focuses on women in tech. Each term, 70-100 girls come along to meet like-minded people and learn how to code. Michelle is a room coordinator for students who have some knowledge and just need that little bit extra tutelage. Zoe is a tutor in the beginner’s room, breaking down barriers and helping girls to understand some of the coding concepts. Very proud of these women.

Michelle received WiTWA’s Shining Star in STEM/Technology Education Award and Zoe took out the Rising Star in STEM Award.

The third starring person is Poojan Sharma. She is a recent graduate, with the highest WAM I have seen (91.85), and for the third year in a row is one of ECU’s top 100 students. An incredible effort from someone who studies, works part time, volunteers and teaches from time to time. Poojan also received the Vice Chancellors Award for Contribution to University Life for 2022. You can see why! More importantly, Poojan volunteers her time with Girls’ Programming Network. She can be found tutoring in any of three rooms helping beginners to advanced coders. Poojan enjoys sharing hints and tips to develop their knowledge. In addition to being a tutor, Poojan is a mentor and a role model. She is often seen with other volunteers around her, in conversation, sharing her advice and linking women together. Poojan received WiTWA’s People Choice Award – she certainly would be my choice but is now IBM’s.
