Girls Programming Network provides coding workshops for high school girls and gender minorities. Each term we offer different types of workshops on different themes. This term we focussed on the creative side and coded the game – Flappy Bird. We had four full rooms, with girls and gender diverse students from government, private, catholic and home schools in attendance. We were proud of our outreach.

Coupled with the number of students in attendance is the joy of having graduates return to GPN as tutors. ECU has built up a strong cohort of computing and security Alumni. Now working in local industry, they return to GPN as mentors sharing stories about their job, tasks/projects they are working on and how university helped pave the way. There were lots of one-on-one conversations being held and corridor chats about the world of work and grad programs.

Along with returning university students, we have GPNers who have finished school and rise to become tutors. It was so good to hear about their studies and where their future lies. They had lots of opportunities to share their stories including personal projects, subject selections for year 11 and 12, and how to transition into a university. It is this chain that helps fill the STEM pipeline.

GPN is safe environment where we all get to learn about what is in front of us. Perth’s tech community is so generous, and the many volunteers helped make the day a huge success. We are thankful for the #ChampionsCreatingChampions
