As part of International Women’s Day, ECU’s School of Science: computing and security coordinated a series of tech workshops across Perth. The day was specifically designed for female and gender diverse high school students. ‘Women in Tech’ were able to showcase their jobs, their industry and why they like it. It was great to see over 100 girls attend this year’s event.

Security and Intelligence lecturer Jen Medbury provided an insight in the field of intelligence. Having previously worked at Australian Signals Directorate and WA Police she had a lot of stories to share. Jen Medbury took the students through some basic intelligence gathering techniques, information analysis and digital forensics. The finale was putting their skills to work in a crime solving activity.

Currently, the number of females in year 12 enrolling in tech courses remains about the same - with 3 more enrolments in Applied IT or Computer Science General and ATAR in 2021 an increase from 2020. It is initiatives like this that help broaden the eyes and minds of our year 9's and 10's into considering STEM subjects and to study computing and security.

Thank you to our other staring women who supported the day Natasha Ferguson (Cyber CX), Bex Nitert (Ankara), Emily Major-Goldsmith (EverNiimble), Michelle Sandford (Microsoft), Susan Kreemer Pickford (Engineers Australia – WA), Marie Smyth (DUG), Leonie Yann (Sentient), Imogen Winsborough (Scitech), Ann Backhaus (Pawsey Supercomputer center), Jennifer Medbury (Edith Cowan University) for taking the time to support this event.
