Overview of thesis

My current research titled “Lupin: prospective superfood or potential allergen” focuses on application of advanced proteomics techniques and cutting-edge computational biology tools to investigate the genetic diversity of lupin varieties. Screening of the lupin resources available will result in identification of lupin varieties with quality protein complement which can be used for commercial cultivation or be exploited in breeding strategies to improve the available varieties.

The LC-MS methods developed for the study will be employed for reliable detection and quantitation of nutritional (bioactive) and anti-nutritional (allergenic) lupin proteins not only at commodity (grain) level, but also in commercial food products. In this way, we can examine how proteins that can affect health (either positively or negatively) persist from the crop to the food that we eat. This will assist food manufacturers to provide value-added high protein ingredients and comply with labelling legislations that aims to safeguard the health of the allergic consumers.
