Mahya Bahmani

Overview of thesis

Mahya’s PhD project is focused on application of mass spectrometry-based proteomics to characterise barley breeding lines.

In her research project mass spectrometry-based approaches will be used to investigate the relationship between the types and amounts of grain proteins with different malting characteristics in barley genotypes. By application of proteomics, key proteins that are linked to desirable malting characteristics in different barley lines will be identified, characterized, and quantified. Additionally, through her research program the impact of genetic and environment in protein content and composition of barley genotypes will be investigated.

The results of her research will be used to assist plant breeding programs to select barley lines with enhanced quality prediction but also open new avenues on the potential use of barley for food and beverages. It is anticipated that the foundational knowledge obtained will provide opportunities to improve the quality of barley and malt in Australia and provide tools to select unique germplasm for barley breeders to improve breeding programs for future potential of barley applications as food and beverage.
