Clare is an Industry PhD candidate studying in collaboration with CSIRO, InterGrain and the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Innovations in Peptide and Protein Science at Edith Cowan University.

Overview of thesis

Project Title: Proteomic understanding of grain germination to improve selection of barley varieties with internationally competitive malting quality characteristics.

In this project, we will use a combination of cutting-edge proteomics and grain compositional analysis to unravel the mechanisms through which a barley variety with unique malting properties outperforms traditional malting barley lines. This will involve protein biochemistry, high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), bioinformatics analysis and statistics to define the proteins that are differentially expressed over the malting time course and in the different varieties. The data collected will be correlated with a complete grain compositional analysis including starch, non-starch saccharides and analytical measurements made over the course of barley malting. The knowledge gained will then be used to determine if there are strategies that can be developed to assist breeding for the enhanced malting characteristics. The project will link cutting-edge science with industry application.
