Overview of thesis

This PhD project aims to understand the mechanisms and processes of a natural recovery of seagrass in South Australia, in order to inform restoration programs.

In Adelaide (SA), significant losses of seagrass meadows occurred during the 20th century due to human activities and coastal development. Efforts have since been made to improve water quality, resulting in a huge recovery of seagrass in the metropolitan waters. Despite being detected through satellite and aerial imagery, this unprecedent recovery of more than 11,000 hectares of Posidonia meadows has been poorly documented and understood. This PhD project employs genetic and hydrodynamic modelling tools to assess the conditions and mechanisms that enabled the recovery, with a global aim of informing and improving restoration efforts on a large scale.
