Marine science

Marine science

The School of Science is committed to advancing marine science through both applied and fundamental research.

Research Centres and Facilities

Marine research is undertaken by members of the Centre for Marine Ecosystems Research.

The Centre for Marine Ecosystems Research (CMER)

The Centre for Marine Ecosystems Research (CMER) use applied and fundamental research to improve our understanding of the ecological processes of coastal marine systems, and how these respond to both natural and human induced pressures.

Research themes

The School of Science marine research focuses on understanding the functioning of coastal marine ecosystems, identifying the threats they face, and developing solutions to protect them.

Research is structured around five key themes:

  1. Habitat Connectivity & Trophic Interactions
  2. Human Impacts on Marine Ecosystems
  3. Blue Carbon & Paleo Reconstruction
  4. Conservation and Fisheries Biology
  5. Marine Radioactivity and Tracers

Alliances

The School of Science have strong alliances with a wide range of research organisations within Australia and Internationally.

Our Centre for Marine Ecosystems Research in particular, has collaborations with leading organisations across government, industry, academia and international research communities. These alliances enhance our ability to address complex marine challenges, drive innovation and contribute to sustainable ocean stewardship.

Collaborators include:

  • Australian government agencies
  • Global universities
  • Conservation organisations
  • Industry leaders

Each plays a vital role in advancing marine science and ecosystem management.
