Experienced researcher and leading Aboriginal scholar Professor Dan McAullay has been appointed the Dean of Kurongkurl Katitjin, ECU’s Centre for Indigenous Australian Education and Research.

In this role, Dan will lead Kurongkurl Katitjin and concurrently hold the position of Director, Aboriginal Research across the University.

For almost three decades, Dan has made significant and impactful contributions throughout his work across a range of sectors; at local, state, national and international levels.

Dan began his career as a registered nurse in a large tertiary metropolitan hospital and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health has always been a focus as Dan pursued studies in epidemiology and built a career in health research, policy and practice.

He brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles within universities, not-for-profit and government sectors, focusing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child and adolescent health and capacity building.

Dan has driven considerable growth and excellence in Aboriginal research at ECU, most notably awarded a $3 million National Health and Medical Research Centre (NHMRC) Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies 2021 grant, earlier this year.

Dan said he was excited by the opportunity to lead Kurongkurl Katitjin and contribute broadly to the University’s whole-of-institution vision to progress further its commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, staff, people, families, and communities.

“Kurongkurl Katitjin is uniquely positioned to transform how our university collaborates with and on behalf of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people”.

“Through strong community engagement, dedicated student support, innovative teaching & learning and world-leading research, we are well placed to attract our future leaders, who will cultivate significant contributions across different disciplines and sectors for the benefit of our community”.
